NY Window Tinting

In New York, you are only allowed to have a certain amount of tint. The state has established one law, but you must keep in mind that in other districts or counties may have a separate law just for their own safety.

Would you like to know when New York established this law. Well it was enacted in 1991.

In this law, it states exactly what the state of New York allows for tinting windows. The difference between states laws usually depends on how high of a crime rate they have. When I was doing my research, the states with the most crimes, past crime rates, had to have the most visibility when it came to tinting windows.

In New York, you are able to have non reflective tint on just very top, no more than six inches down. Most times this is long enough to give you a nice windshield tint strip.

Both the front and side windows have to let more than seventy percent of light in. The state of New York does not have any stipulations for the rear windows.

They do not really have any laws against how reflective the tint can be. The only thing they did say, was that both the front and back side windows cannot be metallic appearance or that it cannot look like you are looking in the mirror.

Some states have banned some colors of tint allowing only certain colors to be used; New York is one of the states that have not currently banned any colors.

In reference to the side mirrors, if you are going to get your back window tinted, then you must have two side mirrors, but more cars already have these so this is normally not an issue.

While these are the state laws for window tinting, certain cities have their own laws. Albany, Buffalo, Rochester, Yonkers, Syracuse, and other places may all have specific laws in regards to window tinting.  It is best to contact a local attorney or lawyer familiar with window tint fines or tickets.  They will have all the resources and be a better source of knowledge than I am on the city level at this time. Who knows, they may even be able to get your case dismissed.
