There are many different ways to remove window tint from your car, truck or SUV that you no longer want tinted, or are looking to go darker. On a side note here, it is easier to add auto tint to a window that already has it on it than it is to remove and then add new tints.

The reason for this is that the chemicals used to clean the glass and remove the film need to be totally off the glass so that the new stuff sticks. This takes a week or two after removing it so many people just tint over the originals film instead. Either way seems to work.

Let us start with the back window. Here you must be very careful because the defroster lines are in the way. You can buy special tint removal tools to help you and then soak the area in a ammonia type mix and cover with a plastic bag to keep if off your seats. Yes, this smells very bad but does work. It loosens it up good and allows you to get it off.

I tried this before and the fumes got to me so I let my professional tint shop handle that job.  The side windows are easier though, as you might be able to removal them with a tint removal blade of some sort that the shops sell. You can try just a razor blade but be very careful or you will permanently scratch the glass and that will look very bad.

Some people also use a steamer to loosen up the film so it just peels off. It is kinda like wallpaper, sounds easy to do, but once you get into it, is really hard and a waste of good time.

Removing window tint does not have to be a hard job and you should weigh you time versus how much you think it will cost to get it done. Be very careful around your defroster lines and not to damage the glass. This job could be one for you.
