Auto Window Tinting
Most people think tint is just glued onto the windows and you drive away. It is not that simple and it takes quite a bit of time and research in order to do the job right. Some people like to DIY, while others would rather pay a professional to do the tint job right the first time. It is not easy to do.
Window Tint Background
Window tint dates back many years, but the quality of window tint has improved immensely. From 3M to Llumar, there are many companies that can produce black window tint film, as well as, red, blue or mirror colored films.
The choice is yours, and many people love the way it looks on their car. It also keeps the bright light out and can really reduce glare during the morning or late at sunset. Be sure to be careful at night as you cannot see quite as well, but many people are willing to deal with this risk.
Tinting Windows Help
If you do want to tint your car yourself, these tips below can help you out.
1. Be sure to measure your window on the outside and make a template. Then, flip it over and cut the window tint to match the template. You flip it over because you measure on the outside of the car window, but you will apply the tint to the inside.
2. By quality window films from either 3M or Llumar. Each makes a good film and I can only speak on these two. I have not had to try a different company myself. Each window tint roll will probably cost around $20 or so, depending on the brand.
3. Measure twice cut once. Simple, but effective.
4. Have patience and take many breaks. If you do not you will end up with bubbles in your window tint and not be happy. Sometimes you can get them off with a hair dryer or heat gun, but it is best to take your time and not get bubbles in the first place. Also, the same applies to creasing. If you crease your tint you have to start over.
5. Use proper mixture when applying the car window tint. Normally this is a soapy mixture that varies based on numerous factors.
6. Take your time!
7. If you think you cannot do it, then call a pro.
Window Tinting Service
Sound too hard to do DIY window tinting? You are not alone. Many people do not have the patience or skill to do it themselves.
It is important to do your research when finding a good place for your window tinting service. Call local shops and ask for references. Stop by and see if you can see them work. Note that many shops outsource their work so be sure to ask who does their auto tint jobs. If they cannot answer these questions I would go to another shop for your car tint.
Once you are happy with a tint service provider, go ahead and schedule the appointment. Expect a few hours for the job, but you want to drop off the car and come back later so it can set up properly. Also, do not roll down your windows for 3 days so it does not peel. Nothing is worse than peeling window tint.
Window Tinting Prices
Most pro tint shops charge anywhere from $90 for a two door coupe, to $250 for a 4 door sedan. However, prices vary by location and many are either less or more than the above window tint prices.
Also, the tint strip on top of the windshield can often be added for $25 or so. The windshield tint strip is the best because it really helps you during a bright sunny day.
