For anyone out there thinking about doing automobile window tinting for a living I am going to try to stop you now. 10 years ago I tried to tint my old Lincoln’s windows myself. I thought I am smart and can follow instructions so how hard could this be? Well, very hard in fact.
The first thing I thought was that by just using a roll of tint and not precut tint that it would still be easy. Not true. Cutting the film is very hard to get just right and I would often tear some of it because I was too lazy to use a old razor or box cutter instead of getting a fresh blade to cut with.
The real problem came with trying to get the rear window cut right with all those defroster lines back there. That was so hard I gave up and just stuck the tint strips to the back on the outside. Yes, that is right the outside of the window where rain and snow would get. That was dumb I know, but I had no clue back then. Sure to say after people told me that would not work I got it done by a shop after all my wasted time. I wish I could try again because I would know what not to do.
My advice is to try, but expect to fail the first time, since tint jobs are not that easy no matter what you know. There is a reason why automobile window tinting shops are always busy, they know how to do a quality job for a cheap and fair price.
I did help a buddy a few years back and it turned out to be pretty good, just a few bubbles on the bottom of the window, but overall it was a good job. Good luck if you try your skills at this soon!
